Reading, My Favorite Fall Activity

Regardless of where I am in life, books are a constant source of entertainment, education, and fulfillment.  Fall weather, with it’s cool air, crackling leaves, and tilted sun, entices me to grab a blanket and curl up with a new book.  I recently finished Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee.  To Kill a Mockingbird, the American classic, has been a staple in my personal library since my youth.  Go Set a Watchman was no let-down.  Lee ignites the fire within the reader with her descriptions of Southern life, but also by forcing us to reflect on past issues that are quite relevant yet today.  If you loved To Kill a Mockingbird, I suggest you buy Go Set a Watchman to add to your personal library.

Currently, I am reading The Hunger Games series.  This was done with much reluctance, but yet again my sister won the battle.  Whenever I put my foot down and refuse to read a popular new novel, she tricks me into reading it by placing it in an assortment of books.  If a book is in front of me, I have a difficult time refusing to read it.  I was completely surprised by The Hunger Games, and am now enthralled in Catching Fire.  If you like adventure and survival books, you will really enjoy Suzanne Collins books.

Whether I am at the ranch, at the house, at school, or visiting family back home, I bring a book wherever I travel.  On Monday, I am going to teach a lesson about what kinds of great adventures we can encounter through reading.  We have to put in very little effort to learn about new people and places through our experiences with good literature. Hopefully my students will be inspired to get a new book to curl up with over these chilly fall months.

As I leave school today and get ready for the last half of this session’s yoga series, know that I am thankful for each of you, and I hope you all have the opportunity to find a peaceful place to enjoy the written word.

God Bless You,
The Displaced City Girl
