Tonight as the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Utah Jazz, many Lakers fans will watch with heavy hearts as Kobe Bryant plays his final game with the team with which he has spent his entire NBA career. A basketball game might not be a big deal in the whole scheme of things, but to see an athletic icon like Kobe Bryant retire makes me realize yet again that things cannot stay the same forever.  I do not handle endings well, whether it is saying good-bye to friends and family after a trip back home or watching the final episode of Downton Abbey (a tear-causing event).  Endings generally leave me with a heavy heart, and I expect no different tonight.

Regardless of personal opinion, favored teams, or records, I do not think many people can argue that Kobe Bryant is one of the Greats.  Like everyone, he has dealt with his own struggles in life, but he persevered.  That kind of inner strength is something I admire.  As the Lakers say good-bye to a teammate, I hope they feel the support of fans across the nation tonight.  We’ll definitely be cheering.
